True Random Number Generator  11

I really really want the glow beacon vest!

Congratulations, Ash!  The drawing was totally random–I promise!  Enjoy the glow beacon vest!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! I’m hoping to get through a bunch of errands and organizing, including:

  • Get 3 loads of laundry out of the  dryer and fold and put them away.  I don’t mind doing the washing and drying, but the folding and putting away kills me.
  • Finish holiday decorating–currently 75% complete
  • Continue throwing out things we don’t use, we are doing this slowing and trying to get rid of 2 garbage bags full of stuff each weekend until we have less clutter!
  • Finish some birthday and Christmas shopping–all online
  • Grocery shop and start prepping for large dinner party on Thursday
  • Make dinner for tonight, I promised Frank I’d make this PW recipe.
  • Take Pettitte to dog school
  • Organize the chaos that we currently call a bedroom
  • Wash dishes

If I get through all of that, I will be thrilled!  Better get moving.photo-6

Review and Giveaway of New Balance 890v3 Running Shoes

There’s no better way to start the last day of the weekend than with a giveaway.

The giveaway: a pair of New Balance Team Garmin Sharp 890v3 limited edition running shoes.

new balance

Team Garmin Sharp is an elite American cycling team and for three years in a row, New Balance has been the official makers of their “off-bike shoes.” Or as we know them, running shoes!  They have a cool argyle pattern and a vivid blue color, which I find a welcome departure from the neon colors that seem to dominate the market.

I’ve been wearing these shoes for three weeks and I love them!

I’ve worn them running, to Uplift and Refine classes and to gym spinning classes and they’ve worked every time!  They are nice and light and have an extra comfy lining inside.  I was worried that they would be too narrow for my wide feet, but shockingly, I’ve not had a single issue.  Shoes that make my feet look thinner? Amazing!  I love them and know it’s your turn to try your own pair!

To enter: Leave a comment telling me what you think  is the most important factor to consider when you buy running shoes? Comfort? Weight? Laces? I want to know!

Contest ends Friday!  Good luck.  Only U.S. entries are eligible to win.

New Balance GPS Runner Sport Watch Giveaway!

When you start running, you generally keep things basic, sneakers, shorts, and (maybe) a dri-fit tee. But there comes in a time in the life of most runners where they start adding to their gear collection.  First I added a fuel belt, then I got a gait analysis and bought appropriate shoes for my stride.  But I wanted a GPS watch for a very long time before I actually bought one.  While very useful, they are also very expensive!

So today, I am giving away a New Balance GPS Runner Sport Watch!

Here are all the geeked out details of the NB Watch:

The New Balance GPS Runner Sport Watch Tracks Speed, Distance and Pace via   satellite.

  • Speed and distance monitor features 4 display presets and 3-line multiview
  • Chronograph/data function offers a 100 hr. range, 1/100 second resolution, 300 laps/splits and 100-run memory
  • Data recall includes date, run/lap number, total exercise time, calories burned, total distance, average speed, average pace and total lap time/distance
  • Time/alarm function feature
  • Speed and distance can be set to display in metric or imperial units
  • Watch is rechargeable via included USB charging cable
  • The New Balance GPS Runner sport watch is waterproof to 30m (100 ft.)

UFX First Impressions Review!

Tonight I took my first UFX class. I had no idea what to expect other than that it was sort of like Crossfit.  OMG it kicked my butt, it may have been the hardest workout I have ever done.

It took a while to get everything organized, and while I was waiting, a trainer asked me if I was sure I was ready for the intermediate/advanced level UFX.  I was like, yeah, I got this, don’t you see I am wearing my I Heart Sweat shirt?  Maybe I shouldn’t have spoken so soon!

The class killed me.  Fortunately, my trainer, Key, was awesome.  He encouraged us the whole way and made sure to count down the remaining time when we needed it most.  The class was just two people, so it was almost like having a personal trainer! Below you can see the workout, some of the moves were way harder than I imagined and a minute seemed like forever, but fortunately, you can do a minute of anything, so mentally I could get through it, even if physically, I almost couldn’t. I will wait until next week to do a more formal review. But I am nervous and excited for Wednesday’s session!

UFX Intermediate Workout

Circuit 1 (1 minute each, entire circuit repeated 3 times)

  • Box Jumps
  • Squat with Kettle Ball Swing
  • Seated Row
  • Squat with Overhead Press

Circuit 2 (1 minute each, entire circuit repeated 3 times)

  • Weighted ball throw with squat
  • Push up with arms up
  • Double Rope Swing
  • Push up Burpees (omg, down, jump back push up, stand and jump)

Circuit 3 (1 minute each, entire circuit repeated 3 times)

  • Balance ball squats (on back with ball between feet and bring into chest and out to hover above ground)
  • Reclining side twist with kettle ball
  • Plank Up (plank where you lower to elbows and return to straight arm)

Don’t forget to comment to enter you’re choice of Vbarre or UFX! I will pick a winner on Wednesday!

Thanks for all the entries in the Alo Clothing giveaway!  It was one of the most popular giveaways in FitnessNYC history!

It turns out most people really care about design and flattery with function and comfort following right behind! Cost was also mention a time or two :)

Heather | July 24, 2011 at 5:55 pm | | Edit

I think clothes that are flattering/comfortable is most important. There’s so many choices out there but finding something that actually looks good on is sometimes a challenge. I’ve also liked Alo on facebook. Cute stuff!!!

Thanks for entering everyone.  I hope you like your outfit as much as I like mine, Heather!

The Giada Chronicles

My love and admiration of Giada is well-documented on the blog.  I have a fair number of cookbooks, but I reach for Everyday Italian time and time again! I’ve made over a dozen recipes from it, many more than once and I’ve also made quite a few that I saw on her show. Her recipes are simple, delicious and, generally, pretty healthy, so there’s a lot to love—and eat.

Last night, I finally made a recipe that I have been wanting to try forever!!!!!!!!!

Oreccheitte with Mixed Greens and Goat Cheese

I made a few substitutions. I used whole wheat pasta, added grilled onions and subbed a baby arugula mix; as I fear soggy greens, I wanted something that would either stand up to the heat or wilt. It was delicious, I might make it again tonight—this time with more sundried tomatoes.  It also took less than 15 minutes start to finish, definitely a success.  The cheese sauce would have been smoother  (and more photogenic) if I added the suggested pasta water, but again, I don’t like soggy, wet greens (which is why I often forgo salad dressing), so I decided it didn’t need it—it’ didn’t.  Yum.IMG_1779

Another Giada success.  I decided to take a look back at some of my other Giada favs.

Caprese Salad— I definitely recommend adding basil generously, not sure why I didn’t in this photo.  This is great for entertaining as it looks so pretty.

Salmon Baked in Foil (this is the only one that didn’t work, fail)

Salmon with Herb Mustard Glazeso good!

Linguine with Butter, Pecorino and Black Pepper

Chicken Cacciatori—huge raves from the boy.  I made it with skinless chicken breast to save time and calories—and I also doubled the veggies.

So thank you Giada for so many delicious meals and a trip down recipe lane!

This morning I woke up and realized that it was 9:30, and I was supposed to take a 10:00 30/60/90 class!  I got dressed as quickly as I could while still making myself Equinox appropriate (aka cute and fashionable), then I hauled booty to the 19th and Broadway location, which is probably 3/4 of a mile from my apartment. Somehow I managed to sign in (it was an open house weekend) and get to the class in plenty of time, despite all the fluster.  Missy also happened to be there, which was a fun surprise! Full review of the class to come!

Just a reminder, the Alo Clothing giveaway ends tomorrow at 5PM.

Alo Clothing Review and Giveaway!!!

A month ago I was lucky enough to receive two pieces of workout apparel from Alo Sport. It was hard to decide which stylish options to select from, I wanted every gorgeous piece. Alo manages to be trendy, eco-friendly and functional all at the same time. Ultimately, I chose a pair of Workout Short Capris in Black and the Performance Tank in Fire Magenta.

Over the last month plus, I have put these pieces to the test in all types of workouts: running, dance classes, yoga and at the gym.

Let’s talk pants:

IMG_1968 IMG_1976

The capris are awesome. They are flattering (seriously important for skin tight pants), they are comfortable (also, seriously important for skin tight pants), they have just enough compression to support the muscles during running without feeling restraining or chaffing in anyway, which means they translate well to other activities, like yoga. I am definitely happy with the level of support these pants give me. While the pants are very light and thin, they are just heavy enough that I should be able to wear them through the early fall season, until full length pants are needed, which is great. If these pants were designed solely for running, I would really like to see the addition of a small pocket, so I could stash keys and a metrocard in them rather than carrying separately.

Let’s Talk Top

The top I was sent is very well made and the colors are just as bright and beautiful in person as they looked online. It’s one of the most fashionable pieces I own. The price points are slightly less expensive than similarly high end brands. I have worn the top for dance, yoga and at the gym, and the built in sports bra has provided plenty of support for these activities. The scoop neck and lines of the shirt are very feminine and the band right under the bust line is perfectly placed. The shirt is very form fitting with a little stretch—so if you are well endowed, you might want to order up a size to make sure the top is large enough.

Let’s Talk Eco

I do my best to be environmentally whenever possible–I recycle, I reuse, and I try to remember my own bags. However, sometimes fashion is where I draw the line. Alo clothing is just as high quality as your standard brand, but also minimizes impact on the earth. For me, that makes the decision to opt for Alo a simple one.

Check out their mission: To create high performance, stylish lifestyle wear with outstanding function, designed and produced with minimal impact on the environmental elements alo stands for: Air. Land. Ocean. We provide customers with a choice that is respectable of the environment without sacrificing fashion.

Through the use of recycled and minimal impact materials, alo creates high performance activewear that delivers superb function, fit and style. With environmentally mindful design and production processes, our men’s and women’s collections utilize eco-friendly performance fabrics that provide outstanding comfort and results. Our most technically advanced Bamboo Jersey fabric has inherent properties that wick moisture and is naturally anti-bacterial, hypoallergenic and breathable with no added chemicals.

Pure Giveaway–closed!

My love of Pure Food and Wine is well documented on the blog.  Perhaps the product I love the most is the Rosemary Quackers from one Lucky Duck.  They are so flavorful and delicious.  They are one of the key components, in addition to avocado, to my favorite salad: The S and M.  But it’s not just me, these quackers have a big following—Kath’s a fan too.

Now they can be your, I will be giving away a bag of Rosemary Quackers.

Sunday Dinner

As promised, Sunday involved a special dinner. I took a clue from Rachel and made Giada’s Brown Butter Sauce to go with Butternut Ravoli from Eataly.

Let me backtrack, to start we had crudite with hummus

Then we whipped up some homemade bruschetta

IMG_0760 IMG_0762 IMG_0764 IMG_0770IMG_0768

And for the main course,

Fresh butternut ravioli

I made the buttersauce with sage, toasted walnuts and cranberries, then sprinkled with parmesan and added a dusting of cookie for sweetness and crunch

While I loved the addition of the cranberries and walnuts, I don’t think either one of could really appreciate this much butter in one recipe.  I used unsalted butter, which may have resulted in a loss of richness, and a more oily flavor.  .  While this was not our favorite sunday dinner, I think  it was our prettiest! IMG_0778

I do love this butternut ravioli, I just need to figure out what to put it in that both tasty and reasonably healthy. Any thoughts?
