Almafi Coast: Positano & Capri

Traveling to the Almafi Coast together was one of our pre-baby bucket list items.  While we didn’t necessarily expect it to be a babymoon, it was an incredible trip and we loved every minute.  After our original cruise plans got derailed, we ended up keeping our flight to Barcelona, spending 3 nights there, 3 nights in Positano and 2 nights in Capri.

We flew from Barcelona to Naples on Sunday morning, despite a 90 minute delay after boarding (super fun in the middle seat), we got to Naples around 1:15 in the afternoon.  I had booked an excursion through Sorrento Top Excursion for later in the week, and the owner emailed to see if we needed a transfer to our hotel from the airport.  I decided to take him up on it, since the train to bus to bus route seemed like a lot of transferring and coordination.  We stepped off the plane and Giovanni was there waiting.  Definitely a good call to splurge on car service (which was the same cost as a taxi).  We hit a bit of traffic but still made it to Positano in an hour and a half.

We stayed at the Hotel Marincanto…and oh my god, it was amazing!  It had the most stunning views of the sea and the cliffs, plus it’s the only hotel with private beach access.  I came across the hotel via We Are Travel Girls blog, and I can’t thank them enough for the recommendation.  It was incredible! It’s set on a hill about a 10 minute walk from the center of town, which makes it a bit quieter and also enhances the views.

It was basically an apartment (it actually had TWO bathrooms) minus the kitchen.  But the best part was the terraces, we spend  on them a ton of time enjoying the great views!

Second to the terraces was the jetted spa tub.  Amazing! I need one in my next home.

Positano is relatively small, but it has a lot to offer, including great restaurants.   We had some truly amazing pizza while we were there.  My favorite was from Buca di Bacco, which seemed like a touristy place on the beach, but ended up being delicious.  After ordering two pizzas for our first lunch, we knew to order a salad and share a pizza moving forward. The pizzas on the Almafi Coast are large (and pricey).

We had dinner at La Sponda our first night.  It’s in the fanciest hotel on the island, Le Sirenuse.  The atmosphere was beautiful with plants and candles (over 400!) covering every inch of the romantic space.

This is a just a small sample of what we had…

Amuse bouche – shrimp and ricotta on toast

The chef’s play on pasta carbonara (also complimentary)

Lobster spaghetti

Strawberry and gelato – yum

If you’re in Positano and want to splurge on a special dinner, I definitely recommend La Sponda, it has to be one of the most romantic restaurants around.

The breakfast at our hotel was wonderful. While it was on the chilly side a few mornings, when it was warm enough to sit outside, it was spectacular.

Most days we wandered the streets of Positano, enjoying the hills, shops, beach and hiking trails along the sea.

Enjoying afternoon espressos or hot chocolate

I even got a pair of handmade sandals!

Our other top restaurant pick was Max.  The food was excellent! Definitely the best gnocci I’ve ever had. It really exceeded my expectations.

We booked a day tour that picked us up at our hotel and took us to Sorrento.  We spent some time wandering the streets and doing some shopping.  Then we went to Mt. Vesuvius! The hike to the crater was short, but tough! It’s so amazing to me that this is an active volcano that has exploded multiple times.  It’s incredible that people live so close to it!

Next up was lunch at a winery.  The wines in this area are planted in volacanic soil, so they take on ashy, minerally undertones. Generally, wines from Vesuvius are called Lacryma Christi.   I had researched a different vineyard for our lunch, but our guide and driver suggested Sorrentino Vini as it was often less crowded.  I’m so glad he suggested the change, as Sorrentino was fabulous.  We were in for way more food (and wine) than we expected.  Despite being hungry upon arrival, we were stuffed when we left.

First up was an antipasto plate, paired with their sparkling Lacyma Christi.  I did try a sip of each wine, except the dessert wine.  There was so much food to offset the ounce or two I consumed that I wasn’t worried about it in the least. I haven’t missed alcohol at all in everyday life, but being on vacation makes a glass of wine much more enticing.

Up next was a giant plate of pasta. So simple, but so so so very delicious.  The tomato sauce was so fresh, I could have eaten it out of the pot. The next two courses were paired with red wines-sorry I don’t have more of a description.

While I was basically past the point of no return after the pasta, the next course was lovely, provolone with honey and walnuts and eggplant parmesan.

And finally a cake filled with apricot grown on the vineyard. This came with a dessert wine.

Our last stop of the day was Pompeii. I had been there once when I was 15, and it was just as impressive as I remembered.  We didn’t leave much time to explore and we both would love to go back with hours to explore and wander the uncovered city.

The next day we said a sad goodbye to Positano and hopped on the hydrofoil (fast ferry) to Capri.

Our hotel, Relais Maresca, was steps from the port in Marina Grande.  While this isn’t the prettiest area of Capri, it actually worked out well since we were there at the very start of the season and a things in Capri Town and Ana Capri shut down on the early side.  It was also very close to the buses, taxis and the funicular (gondola). If we had stayed more than two nights and at a slightly busier time of year, we likely would have stayed in main area of the island, Capri Town.

April is apparently the first month of the “summer” season. During the day, Capri is packed with people there for day trips, but at night it’s actually quite quiet in early April. In fact, a lot of the restaurants I wanted to try were still closed or only open for lunch.

We started our day by venturing to town. I had forgotten how many high end designer stores there are in the immaculate center of Capri.  It’s like Madison Ave to the umpteenth degree.  All the white buildings flanked by beautiful flowers are stunning.

Our taxi driver had given us good directions to Villa Verde, which was one place I wanted to try, as per Kelly Golightly’s recommendation. It was delicious, although sadly I don’t have any photos.  It was also on the quieter side for lunch, whereas a lot of other areas of Capri were packed.

After lunch, we took a long walk along the seaside paths. There are several paths that you can walk or hike on for hours and hours, and they all offer sweeping views of the seas along flower lined paths.

After heading back to the hotel to relax for a bit, we headed out to the Capri Wine Hotel.  We had seen good reviews of this when were looking at hotels and had almost stayed there.  The staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating.  They gave us our choice of three seating options, near the wine bar, under a covered patio, or in the garden overlooking the water.  We went with the garden.  We were lucky that while it was overcast most days of our trip, it was always pleasant to be outside (especially with a light jacket) and we managed to never get any rain.

Frank enjoyed a flight of wines and we shared an antipasto platter.   Talk about cheese boards, this was a work of art!

The next day was a special one because Frank’s dad was meeting up with us.  His cruise ship was docked in Naples for the day.We could see his ferry pull in from our balcony and quickly met up with him and hopped in a taxi to town.

We wandered the streets and showed him the height and sights.  After that we took another taxi to Ana Capri and spent a good deal of time exploring. We had a lunch reservation at Da Gelsomina.  It’s basically on the edge of the island, so they have a shuttle that picks you up from the town center.  Like the Capri Wine Hotel, the hospitality they showed was incredible.  For a place that must get tired of constant tourists, we really felt the Italian hospitality, the owner told us all about the wineyards, the winemaking and the restaurant.

We ordered quite a bit of food, which was being made in the kitchen by his mother-in-law, all while enjoying great views of the vineyards.

I had the zucchini and squash blossom pasta and it was amazing.

After lunch, we were encouraged to walk through the gardens to the end of the island.  The walk was welcome after all the food! Then they shuttled us back to town, where we were able to catch a bus back down the island.

For our final dinner in Italy, we selected a place that had been highly recommended by locals, Verginiello. We were happy we made a reservation because this seem to guarantee us a window seat.  This restaurant was probably one of the few where we were far outnumbered by Italians.  I actually think we were the only Americans in the room!  All around us, large parties enjoyed family style platters of delicious food and bottles and bottles of wine. It felt like a real life Olive Garden commercial. While it wasn’t the most glamorous restaurant we ate in, it was probably the most authentic.

I couldn’t leave Italy without one last pizza…and it may have been the best of all.

Heaven.

La Dolce Vita!  I hope to come be able to visit again!

Recommendations for Positano and Capri

Ideal time to visit:  late April, May, early June – the weather will be nice enough that you can still enjoy a beach day or two, but you’ll miss the crushing crowds and brutal heat of July and August. My first trip was in July and it was 100 degrees every day and so crowded you could barely move.

Be prepared for high prices: Capri and Positano were pricey.  Restaurants in the most touristy areas charge covers for you to sit down.  Also check to see if servicio (tip) is already included, so you don’t pay gratuity twice.  From my research, if tip isn’t included around 10% is generally fine.

To Do:

Stroll the streets, shop the shops, wander down the narrow alleys and take advantage of the beautiful hiking paths along the sea. The more hills you climb, the more gelato you can eat!

Have lunch on the beach. If you’re a beach person, you’ll be able to rent a chair and umbrella at any of the beaches.

Take home a local product, whether it be linen, handmade sandals or a lemon product –perhaps limoncello!

Day Trip, schedule a day to visit one of the other other islands or towns along the Almafi Coast.  Check out the castles and galleries in Naples.  Climb Mt. Vesuvius and have lunch on a vineyard.  Explore Pompeii or Herculean. I recommend Sorrento Top Excursions!

Restaurant/Drink Recommendations:

Positano:  Max, Buca de Bacco, Chez Black and La Sponda

Capri:  Villa Verde, Capri Wine Hotel (for drinks and apps),Da Gelsomina, Verginiello. I really wanted to try Da Paolina, but it wasn’t opening for another week.

Hotels

Whereever you stay, make sure you have a water view.

Positano: Hotel Marincanto

Friday Faves {4/6/18}

Hello Weekend!

This Friday is particularly fantastic because I’ll be in Barcelona when the post goes up!

Here are a few things I’m loving this week!

Leizl Jane’s 16 Minute HIIT Workout Ideas.  They are mostly do anywhere and also kind of obvious, but it’s a good reminder that a good workout doesn’t have to be long or involve lots of equipment.  I’ll have to do a powerwalk version for now!

New Classes at Mile High

My favorite “run club” has added a 45  minute strength class (with very small amounts of running) and I’m excited to check it out.  The running and meditation class also seems cool!

Fit-Spiration

Rachel Reaches is a really inspiring blog/journal about making changes and seeing results. I knew nothing about Beach Body before looking at her website, but I understand the appeal of working out at home yet having community support.

Fresh Mani

Mixing it up, I actually picked something with color, Ripe Guava!

Packing

I actually love packing! Almost as much as I hate unpacking!

I decided to go with my Tommy Hilfiger roller rather than my Lo and Sons bag, since I’ve found heavy bags on one side tend to bother my back. But the Lo and Sons is a great weekender bag!

Here’s what I’m bringing…

Workout and swim. I’m only bringing a few workout options since we aren’t staying in any hotels with a gym. Most of our activity will likely come from walking.

Tops, I brought a bunch of options (tanks, short and long sleeves) since it could be warm or cold, plus a couple of cardis.

Four dresses, two from Rent the Runway, one from Le Tote and one from Old Navy.  I’m most excited about the navy striped Rosie Pope! (The lighting in this room is terrible, we are changing it soon, but sorry for the dark photos!)

I’m always amazed at how much I can pack in this little suitcase, all you see above plus, 3 pairs of shoes, 2 cotton leggings, 1 pair jeans and the lulu allign tights, socks, bras, etc.

Plus some purses and jewelry! I rented the out of office “taco” bag! I’ve had the coach bag for years and never used it, but I wanted a small cross body for this trip, so I’ll try it out!

In my personal item, I’ll be bringing a few snacks, vitamins, make up, toiletries, chargers, books and a wrap.

Nom Nom Nom

While we are in Capri, I hope to eat at every place in this blog post. Yum!

Hopefully, I can share some highlights from my actual trip, not just my suitcase! Have a fabulous weekend.

Do you pack snacks for travel?

Weekend, Faves, Workouts

The weekend is started early for me! I have the day Friday off and we headed to DC for the weekend to see both family and friends.

We stayed at the MGM National Harbor. I loved the cherry blossom themed lobby decor.  We stayed at this hotel once before. I really love the modern rooms and for a smallish casino hotel, they have some good restaurants!  But perhaps the best thing is that it’s a non-smoking casino. No stale, smokey smell anywhere!

Friday night we went into Old Town Alexandria for dinner at Magnolia’s on King.  Such a cute little downtown. I wish we had planned more time to walk around after dinner.

Saturday morning, we went to the hotel, which was really nice.  I also booked a massage at the spa for that afternoon.  I’ve been having a fair amount of back pain, mostly on days I do I lot of walking, so it felt like a necessity as much as an indulgence.

We enjoyed a light breakfast at the conservatory cafe.  I love that they serve La Columbe all over the hotel, it’s so much better than all other coffee IMO.

After lunch, we walked to the outlets. I got a pair of Sperry’s (my first) at famous footwear and a pair of sunglasses ($10!) at the JCrew outlet.

Then I headed to the spa for my massage.  It was a really nice spa but I didn’t spend a lot of time using the amenities since steam room and saunas are not advisable for pregos,  but I did enjoy every minute of my massage. I received a few spa finder gift cards for Christmas and my birthday, so I’ll probably try to get one massage a month for the new few months.

My sister met us at the hotel, where we hung out before meeting Frank’s family for dinner at Fish by Jose Andres.  It’s definitely worth checking out for the decor and the food!

After dinner we watched the NCAA final four men’s games before heading to the casino. It ended up being my latest night in a while, although anything past 10pm is late for me these days 🙂

This morning, we had breakfast at Frank’s grandmothers before going to church.  We caught an afternoon train back to the city, so we had a little time to get organized for the week ahead.

Pasta primevera is sort of our easter tradition, so I made a baked version with roasted vegetables.

While we were eating, we watched the NCAA Women’s Nortre Dame VS Mississippi State game. It was amazing! Definitely the best March Madness game I saw this tournament.

That was the weekend, but I thought I’d use this post to do a quick recap of my workout’s last week.   This week was much better than last on the sweat front, and it made me realize that I feel a million times better when I work out. Even if you hate working out, you’re not going to be mad about it after it’s over.  I’ve never heard anyone say they were pissed they worked out four hours ago.  Anyways, while I’m not one to have a regimented plan, looking at the week ahead and figuring out the best days to schedule a class or workout seems to help make sure I hit whatever my goals is that week.

Workouts!

Monday:  TIU Daily Moves (Can’t remember, but I think it was legs and booty!)

Tuesday: Orange Theory (Endurance Power Strength)

Wednesday: Orange Theory (Tornado)

Thursday: Xtend Barre

Friday: Rest

Saturday: Gym workout – 35 minutes easy elliptical plus a few back exercises.

Sunday: Rest

I didn’t have enough Friday Faves for a whole post this week, but here are a couple things I’m loving…

Clarissa Explains it All Explained?

This article gave me all the nostalgia feels. I’m not sure I totally buy why Sam had to come in the window, but Clarissa was my hero growing up and any reference is welcome.

Avocado Grower

I saw this avocado grower for $3 at Flying Tiger. I’m really curious as to if it would work! Flying Tiger is a pretty amazing place, so many interesting things for just a few dollars.

I’m in the third trimester!  I’m excited, but surprised by how quickly time has passed. I probably won’t be saying that a few months from now!

Friday Faves {3/16/18}

It’s Friday!  Woot Woot.

I’m excited to share my faves this week! Let me know yours as well! What are you most excited about for the weekend?

Birthday Freebies!

My birthday was yesterday, so I took advantage of as many birthday freebie opportunities as I could!  I started off with a free birthday drink at Starbucks. If you don’t have the app, it’s worth the download for the birthday drink and all the reward points you earn with every purchase. Once you have 125 points, you can get a free item of choice, and there’s no restrictions, so you can go crazy dreaming up the largest, fanciest concoction available.

I treated myself to lunch at Forager’s at the Dekalb Market in Brooklyn.  There are so many great food stalls and restaurants, it was hard to know what to pick.  Forager’s is sort of like the Dig Inn, you pick a protein and three local sides.  I had chicken, cauliflower rice, roasted brussels and zatar spiced carrots! Yum, so much flavor.

On my way back to the office, I  picked up my free birthday gift at Sephora. I just realized they gave me the wrong one, oh well!

I also used my free birthday class at Uplift! I took the express class and it was awesome. Katie, the instructor was amazing about providing modifications clearly, yet discretely.  I love Uplift, I need to go back more often.

Dinner Out

We went to Carbone for dinner, and it did not disappoint. Honestly, I was annoyed that even making a reservation 30 days out, we could only get a 9:45pm reservation, but all was forgiven the second we walked in the door to a warm greeting and a quick seating. It’s a super old school place, but it had some of the freshest italian food I’ve ever had.  The mozzarella was served warm and literally melted in my mouth. Sorry for not taking any pics.

New Mac

I’ve been using my 2010 Macbook Air and it’s been limping along for quite a while to put things politely.  I decided that I’d get myself a new computer for my birthday since it seemed like the appropriate time for a splurge. I debated between the Macbook Pro and the Macbook for quite a while, reading a bunch of reviews and comparisons. I ultimately decided to go with the MacBook with the max power and memory available.  I don’t watch movies on my computer and I don’t do much video editing,  but I upload a fair amount of photos, so hopefully this was the right call. I’m a little nervous about the small screen, but love how light it is…and the gold color. I have 11 days to decide for sure! Anyone love or hate their macbook?

Lo and Sons Catalina Deluxe

This “weekender” bag showed up on my facebook feed and I casually clicked on the link. I then proceeded to watch all their videos and read tons of reviews. Within a few days, I was convinced the  Catalina Deluxe Small was the perfect travel bag for me.  It’s quite large, yet offers a ton of organization, unlike my Longchamp bag. My parents got it for me as a birthday gift and I can’t wait to bring it on our trip next month. My favorite features are the separate shoe/toiletry compartment and it’s ability to slide over the handles of your roller.  Can I pack for a week in this?  We’ll find out!

Resting Barre Face

I ordered this shirt (similar) a while back and it finally came. I know what I’m wearing to xtend barre next week.

Does Your Dog Sleep in Your Bed?

I liked this NYTimes article.  The cover photo looks just like my dog-so happy to be in the bed! We’ve definitely gotten too lax about him in the bed, and our sleep quality definitely suffers when he does.

Nursery Color

We swatched four paint colors over the weekend…and I’m not sure that I love any of them.

From left to right (bottom row is with primer): Benjamin Moore Ballet Slippers, Vintage Taupe, Gray Tint and Seapearl. Also the first picture in the morning and the second is in the evening.

I was leaning toward Ballet Slippers, but I’m worried about too much biege.  I wish the Vintage Taupe had a hint more pink, it just looks bright white to me.  Ultimately, I may go with Seapearl since most of my nursery pins are of soothing, but not stark white walls.  Because I’m insane, I’m going to swatch one more color, just to be sure.

Mrs. Meyer’s Basil Scent

For year’s I’ve been all about the geranium and lemon verbana scents, but I heard Sherry from Young House Love rave about the basil scent recently…and she was right! It’s great. I have basil in the kitchen and lemon in the bathroom.

March Madness

Frank and I have the tradition of going out to dinner and watching the NCAA games the first friday of the Tournament.  I won the pool I entered last year, so I have to defend my title. I will say, I did not expect Buffalo to destroy Arizona last night.  As an upstater, I can’t be mad at it, despite it throwing off my bracket.

NYC Half

If you are running the NYC Half this weekend, good luck! I’ll be cheering just after the mile 4 water stop. 🙂

Babymoon Recap

If I had known how awesome a spa weekend could be, I wouldn’t have waited so long to do it.  It’s been on my bucket list forever–and a babymoon seemed like the perfect occasion! On some level, the idea of baby moons is pretty ridiculous –that said, we enjoyed every minute and I’d do it again!

On Monday morning, we drove to the Poconos.  We stopped at the Settler’s Inn for brunch.  It was a super cute restaurant in a historic inn with a lovely menu.

I ordered the avocado, pear, bacon and goat cheese omelet. It.Was. Massive.

On our way to the Lodge at Woodloch, we noticed a brewery.  We attempted to go into check it out, but it was packed!  If you’re in the Hawley, PA area, the Wallenpaupack Brewery seems like the weekend place to be.

We arrived at the Lodge and it immediately felt like an escape.  The staff was so friendly, they gave us a quick tour, totes and water bottles and showed us to our room. I had specifically selected the babymoon package and were some treats waiting for us in our room!

A bag of “late night cravings treats”

And an adorable bunny and book! The bunny is now named Woodloch, of course!

I forgot to take pictures of the room before our stuff got all over, but it had woodsy inspired decor and a king bed.  I live for king beds on vacation! I took advantage of the pillow menu and ordered the body pillow.

It was a great way to test out a body pillow. It turns out this was way too high for me to comfortably hold on my side.  Frank enjoyed using it though!

We had a nice view from our balcony!

I should mention that you weren’t supposed to use your phones outside the room, so I tried to be subtle about taking pictures.

We had spa appointment booked for the afternoon, so we enjoyed some time in our respective spa areas.

Throughout the resort there were snacks, fruit, an amazing selection of teas, and fruit to infuse your water.  I was probably the most hydrated I’ve ever been on this trip.

I enjoyed a nice prenatal massage before heading out to the pool. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to take advantage of any of the three hot tubs, but I did enjoy being cozy pool side.

When you think spa, you generally think light meals, but Woodloch offered something for everyone, no matter how light or hearty your appetite.  I find lately that I’m not necessarily hungry until I sit down to eat. Once there is food in front of me, I can eat for days.

We sat down to dinner and were treated to an amuse bouche and bread service.  I selected a roasted carrot soup (unpictured) for my first course.

Then I moved onto a nice pear, beet and goat cheese salad.

I had the short ribs for dinner, which were served with polenta. Roasted, caramelized vegetables with tender short ribs is pure comfort food for me.

Since all food was included and you could order as much as you wanted, we ordered the cauliflower steak with lentils as a side to share. While it doesn’t photograph well, this was amazing, so many great textures and flavors!  I’ve never been able to make a good cauliflower steak at home, I don’t know how they do it!

Finally…and I do mean finally, we had some gelato for dessert.

That night, we enjoyed some time outside by the fire.

The next morning, we hit the gym for a few minutes before going to breakfast.  I grabbed a little bit of yogurt, fruit, ground flax and chai seed from the garden bar, mainly to get in those omegas.  I also ordered an open face english muffin with egg, pico, avocado and cheese.

It was delicious. I need to try making my own english muffins because these were incredible.  They reminded me of the australian toaster biscuits I ate as a kid. I don’t think that brand is still around.

One of the things I really loved about Woodloch was the activity schedule, there were fitness classes, outdoor activities, yoga and crafts all day long. True to form, I signed us up for a bunch of the outdoor options.

After that we went on a nice guided 3 mile hike around the property. It was very cold, but very pretty!

We read by the fire for a bit before lunch.  Do you see the eating theme?

I forgot to take pictures, but I had a panko crusted salmon and a delicious salad from the salad bar. I’m a very casual person, and yet I didn’t necessarily feel comfortable wearing my robe around outside the spa. I found it pretty funny that people were wearing their robes all over the resort, including to meals.  Dinner was the only meal that required resort casual attire.

Next up was fire making!  We learned three primitive fire making techniques, which got progressively more difficult. I’m not sure how anyone ever started a fire with the rubbing sticks method!

Since there wasn’t enough snow for the snowshoeing activity we’d signed up for, we went back to the gym for a bit. Then I took the most indulgent, epic nap ever.  I really haven’t napped at all in the 2nd trimester, but I guess all the cold weather activity took it out of me.

Wouldn’t you know, it was time to eat again?

I had a burrata bruschetta to start, followed by a roasted root vegetable salad with warm shallot dressing.

After that I enjoyed the paparadelle pasta with lobster. To finish everything off, I had a chocolate cookie gelato.

It was fairly late by the time we finished dinner, so we watched some of the olympics in the room before hitting the hay.

The next morning, we had another hike planned. But first, breakfast.

This hike was much more challenging, there were a lot of steep parts and some icy patches to avoid. However, the 3 bald eagle sightings were the real highlight.  The views at the top weren’t bad either.

It was a lot warmer than the day before, so I was sweating in my four top layers and two layers of leggings.

Before we headed out, we took advantage of our last lunch on property.

Another great salad from the salad bar. How do they find such sweet tomatoes this time of year?

I also had one of these edammame dumplings.
And a few pieces of caprese flatbread.

It was a wonderful weekend and I was sad when it came to an end. Woodloch ended up being perfect because there was time to relax and enjoy great spa treatments, and there was also plenty to do. Actually there were more activities  I wanted to try than we could even fit in our schedule. Plus, the food ended up being great and quite plentiful!

I definitely recommend Woodloch. Can you tell?  It was a big splurge, but we did save some money since we were able to drive rather than fly and all our meals, activities, and spa treatments were included in our package.

I joined their last minute club, so hopefully we can take advantage of some off-peak special rates and/or day package options in the future.

I can’t believe it’s already the weekend already! I hope you have fun plans.

Disney For Adults

Every other year, Frank and I plan a trip to Disney World the weekend before Thanksgiving.  Last year, we happened to both be in California around the same time for work, so we spent a couple nights in Disneyland once work stuff was done.  Back to back Disney years are rare, but I’m not complaining. 🙂

A lot of our friends are surprised when we say we are going to Disney.  What do you do there? is a common question.  Thus, I thought I’d put together a post of how to find your #disneyside and keep the magic alive as a full on grown up.

The way we plan our Disney now is certainly different than the way our siblings with kids plan a trip.  Neither our wrong, believe me I love kids and the glimmer in their eyes when they see their favorite character, but agendas tend to be different when their are no height restrictions on rides.

For us, our primary focus is where we stay and where we dine (we ate/drank (mocktails for me on the most recent trip) at 18 different places during our last 3 night trip).  We do go to the parks, but we aren’t too worried about getting on rides or seeing characters or parades, so park days tend to be pretty go with the flow.

Let’s start with hotels

Hotels are perhaps my favorite part of Disney.  They are so themed, so detailed and so immersive.  We tend to spend a lot of time visiting the other hotels just to see their decor, enjoy live music/entertainment in the lobby,  grab a drink at the bar, or eat at one of the restaurants.  We like staying on the monorail, as the monorail hotels have some of our favorite restaurants and easy access to Epcot.  Almost all of the hotels we’ve stayed at have a kids pool and “a quiet pool” and they also have a variety of bars and lounges which tend to be patronized by mostly, but not exclusively adults.

Here are a few of our favorite places to hang our hats/mouse ears:

Polynesian – pretty setting, great quiet pool, very tranquil for a Disney hotel. It’s a monorail hotel, which makes it easy to get to Magic Kingdom and Epcot. The ticket and transportation center where you get to the monorail to Epcot is steps away. There is also a nice New Balance running path that takes you along the water.

Boardwalk – Walking distance to Epcot and Hollywood Studios.  The Boardwalk has some entertainment that is open late, such as Jelly Rolls dueling piano bar.  Great running path around the Swan and Dolphin and Yacht and Beach club. Large property with lots of room to explore.  We saved a little money by staying on the vacation club side of the resort, it was a very long walk to the lobby, so I’m not sure I’d do that with kids.

Grand Floridian – on the monorail, good restaurants, afternoon tea, boat access, grand lobby.  Last time we stayed at the GF, it was undergoing reno, so we got a great deal.

Next on our list to try is Animal Kingdom Lodge, which has my favorite lobby on property and amazing restaurants. In Disneyland, we stayed at the Grand Californian, which is quite nice.

Restaurants:

There is so much good dining in Disney, it’s hard to know where to begin, but I’ll start with hotel restaurants and give  the parks and Disney Springs there own section.  While not every day is the same, typically we start off with a light breakfast, share something for lunch, have a snack (such as dole whip), stop somewhere for a pre-dinner cocktail and then enjoy a late dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.

California Grill at the Contemporary is a restaurant we can’t miss. We go one night on every trip.  It has great food, sushi, creative flatbreads, as well as heartier fare. The wine list is also fantastic.  It overlooks the Magic Kingdom, so we always try to coincide our dinner with the view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks.  But if you get there earlier, you’ll probably catch a glimpse of Illuminations at Epcot and the electric water pageant.

Narcoosees at the Grand Floridan is another special spot.  It has a lot of great seafood options in a fairly laid back setting, again with view of the fireworks and water pageant.

On our last trip I enjoyed the harvest salad, lobster tails and the very indulgent yukon mash.

Jiko at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  The AKL has a lot of great dining options, but Jiko is my favorite because I love the setting.  There is something about the birds flying along the sunset sky that I find relaxing.  The fare here has an African/Indian influence, but it is subtle. Some dishes are quite similar to what you’ll find at the other table service restaurants, whereas others are more unique.  I also love the South African wine list, which apparently is one of the largest you’ll find outside of South Africa.  Perhaps my favorite part of dining here is enjoying a few minutes by the fire place in the lobby, then grabbing a pre-dinner drink and Victoria Falls bar.  This hotel is so visually stunning, it’s worth spending some time exploring.

Victoria and Albert’s

On our most recent trip, we had the chance to try Victoria and Alberts, perhaps the fanciest restaurant on property.  This is sort of place, we’ll probably only go once, as it was very pricey, but the service and food did exceed all expectations.  We did the 10 course tasting menu with wine pairings for Frank.  I was glad our reservation was at 5:45pm because the meal lasted 4 hours! That said, everything was beautifully presented and the service was incredible.  I’m so glad we got to try V & A, but it’s not the first place I’d recommend because of the price point. I also didn’t love the decor, although the harp players was fantastic and a highlight of the experience.

Disney Springs

Disney Springs just gets better and better!  The dining is celebrity chef driven, the shopping reminds me of the Grove in California and the street entertainment can be a lot of fun!  It can get pretty crowded at night, but it’s fairly quiet during the day when most people are in the parks.

My favorite place in Disney Springs is the landing, which as so many great restaurants and bars!  A few of my favorites:

The Boathouse

Jack Lindsey’s Hangar Bar

Morimoto Asia

I’m also extremely excited about the opening of the Edison, it looks so cool!

On our most recent trip, we tried two new places that have been added to our favs list:

Rick Bayless’s Frontera Cocina

We shared the atomic guacamole (which was medium-hot, but not nearly as hot as all the warning led me to believe), carne asado tacos (very good, but if you want medium-rare, say medium), and the plaintains.  Everything was really good and the service was friendly and fast.

Art Smith’s Homecomin Southern Kitchen

The atmosphere here is really cute.  We ate on the screened in porch overlooking the water.  We shared the fried green tomatoes with shaved ham and remoulade.  I loved the tomatoes, but didn’t love the ham or remoulade. Frank on the other hand though the ham and remoulade made the dish.

I also had the fried chicken salad, which was epic. A chopped meal, if you will. I ate every single bite.  While the service on the day we went was glacial, the food was so good, it more than made up for it.

Bars and Lounges

There are so many, it’s hard to know where to begin, but I’ll share the three we enjoyed most on our recent trip:

Trader Sam’s Grog’s Grotto

This recently opened bar/lounge at the Polynesian is a classic at the Disneyland Hotel in California.  True to form, the room has fun elements that come alive depending on what you order.  Thunderstorms, volcanos, snow,  you never know what you are going to get, and it might just be “two shots of rum.”  The castmembers go all out with spray water bottles, costumes and punny jokes.  Also, watch out for sinking barstools.  It’s a really good time and the drinks are fantastic.  It’s packed when it opens in the afternoon, but surprisingly quiet late at night.  It’s slightly cornier than the Disneyland version and the menu is more limited, but it’s definitely a place we’d visit on every trip.

Tutto Gusto

This Italian wine cellar themed bar in Epcot is a hidden gem.  I’ve never seen it busy and it has fantastic wine flights and great nibbles that could make a meal if you order enough.  It’s cool, it’s calm and it’s generally an adult hang out.  I highly recommend it, if you need get a break from the crowds.

Abracadabra Bar – This newish Boardwalk bar is magical, literally.  It’s a sleek space that is full of details that will catch your eye if you are watching closely.  We also really enjoyed chatting with the castmembers and their love of a good cocktail.  Definitely a more sophisticated spot than I was expecting!

Parks

It’s funny that I’m saving the parks for last, most consider them the main event. While I enjoy the parks, I’ve been to them enough times that there is generally not to much I have to see, ride or do.  We enjoy our time and stroll around at leisure. Of course, this will all change when our kiddo arrives!

Epcot

Definitely my favorite park.  The World Showcase used to be entirely geared toward adults, but now the character themed rides and interactive games have made it more family friendly.  That said, I never feel like Epcot or the World Showcase is packed to the gills, which is nice. There are so many great places to enjoy a quick or leisurely meal, here are a few we frequent:

  • Hacienda De San Angel
  • La Cantina de San Angel
  • Margarita Stand
  • Lotus Blossom
  • Biergarten
  • Rose and Crown

I’ve also heard that the bakeries in France are open for breakfast even before the park opens.

This visit marked our first time dining at the esteemed Via Napoli.  While it’s not the best pizza I’ve ever had, it may be the best pizza I’ve had outside of NYC or Italy.  We definitely over ordered and couldn’t finish our pie, but the classic margarita was quite delish.

There are so many places I haven’t tried yet, let me know your favorites!

Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is fairly sleepy these days due to all the renovations. When Starwars Land opens, it will be total chaos, so we took advantage with a quiet morning this trip.  (See if you can take a picture anywhere in Magic Kingdom with as few other people as in the photo above). We did midway mania (15 minute wait), enjoyed coffee with Gertie, shopped on Sunset Boulevard and stopped to try the Baseline Tap House.  This is the only Writer’s Workshop, it now offers craft brews and a few light appetizers.  Nothing to write home about, but when we were there it was very quiet and a great place to relax and people watch.

The Brown Derby is another spot we like to stop at for a “fancy” lunch.

Animal Kindgom

I can’t say I’m an Animal Kingdom expert. I love doing the safari, I enjoy Expedition Everest, I love looking at the little marketplaces and booths, but I haven’t tried too many of the restaurants, as I usually prefer to dine at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

On this trip we did get to see the River of Lights show and enjoyed walking around Pandora–so gorgeous at night.  We didn’t get to do any of the rides, as they were 3 hour waits, definitely use your fastpass+ here!  In general, parks at night tend to be a bit calmer and subdued, particularly when it gets close to kids dinner time.

Magic Kingdom

This is not a park where you can expect calm or kid free anything.  I mean, maybe you’ll find some respite at the Hall of Presidents or the Carousel of Progress (the later was one of my favs as a kid, I wish they would update it), but that’s about it. Nevertheless, the Magic Kingdom has the charm, so pick the day that you feel the most patient and set out with a plan of the attractions you want to hit.  Alcohol is only served at the Be Our Guest Restaurant, just fyi.

I grew up in a family that had to try and fit as much in as possible when in Disney, so at first the more leisurely approach felt strange, but it’s nice to not end the day feeling completely spent!

Of course, the magic of Disney are always the moments you don’t expect or anticipate. My favorite was while in Disneyland, the railroad was closed and there wasn’t anyone near the line, but as we approached, the engineer gave us a private tour of the Lilly Belle car that Walt designed specifically for his wife.

Everyone has Disney favorites, so let me know yours!

Labor Day Weekend

Summer is over.  It’s always a sad time of year, especially when temperatures suddenly plunge into the 50s on September 1st, far before you’re ready.

Nevertheless, we had a great weekend upstate.  Thursday night we dropped Pettitte off at Happy Paws and then drove upstate.  We arrived at my parents’ house at 12:30am and pretty much went straight to sleep. My parents weren’t in town, so we left early in the morning for Lake George with a quick stop for breakfast at UnCommon Grounds.

Our second stop was for a hike up Prospect Mountain.  I’d read the hike was short but steep and the description was accurate.  It was about an hour of climbing straight up a fairly rough trail.

We made it to the top, which was much more crowded than the trail since there is also an option to drive.

Supposedly you can see for 100 miles…

Next, we had lunch at the Adirondack Brewery in Lake George Village. Then it was time to check into the Sagamore in Bolton Landing just a few miles up the road.  Lucky for us, our room was ready, so we wasted no time dropping off our things and heading to the pool.

While it was a bit chilly, it was great to be able to relax, take in the views of the lake and indulge in some mindless reading, Superficial by Andy Cohen, in case you are wondering.  I’ve read all of his books and enjoyed them all.  It’s unbelievable how many celebrities he hangs out with and how many restaurants he goes to that I also go to.  It seems impossible that I never ever see celebrities based on the references the book.  I enjoy his humor, name and place dropping, and all the references to Wacha.

That night we had dinner reservations at Chateau on the Lake. I’d made the reservation on a whim since it was one of the few places on Opentable in the area.  Dinner turned out to be spectacular.  The restaurant was charming, the service was great and the food was delicious.

On Saturday, we went to the gym, which was larger and nicer than I expected and then were first in line for the historical walking tour of the hotel.  This is actually the third time we’ve been first in line at a historical walking tour, it’s happened to us at two other hotels.  I’m such a history nerd.  After the tour, we walked into town to get an old fashioned country diner breakfast.  Then we enjoyed a little down time before the hotel’s boat tour of the lake.  I can’t do the lake’s beauty justice with my photo.

After the sail, we spent some time lounging and fit in some pre-dinner minigolf. We had dinner at La Bella Vita which is one of the restaurants in the hotel. It was quite delicious.

Sunday we woke up to pouring rain.  We had plans to golf, but knew that wasn’t going to happen.  So we went to the gym, where  I did 3 rounds of the Gina’s 300 rep workout. I’m feeling my inner thighs today, and that’s not a  bad thing.

We had a late breakfast at another country diner, this town is full of them!  From there we went to the Adirondack Winery and did a tasting.  When we got there, we were able to get the only two spots left at the bar and soon after, there was a line out the door for tastings.  Rainy days are good for the wine business, apparently.  We hit up some of the souvenir shops in town before heading back to the hotel.  It was a great day to sit in Cadwell’s Lobby Bar by the fire and read a book with a latte.

We weren’t the only people with that idea.  Anyone without kids was at the lobby bar and everyone with kids was at the Rec Center.  The Sagamore has something every hour of the day for kids, so a rainy day really isn’t that bad if you’re a kid.

We had our final dinner of the trip at the Club Grill on the golf course. It was fantastic.

Lobster tail with filet and bacon mac n cheese is about as indulgent as one can get. YOLO.

We finished up the weekend with a dinner of dueling salads, caprese and kale caesar.

As we head into fall,  I’ve got a few goals for September:

  • Work out 4 -5 times a week
  • Try Orange Theory Fitness (finally)
  • Start using Duo to brush up on my spanish
  • Cook more dinners in (possibly trying blue apron or hello fresh)
  • Update my linkedin profile
  • Check out Chihuly nights at the NY Botanical Gardens

I hope you had a great Labor Day!

The South African Winelands

I hope everyone’s weekend is off to a good start!  I can’t believe that it was almost two weeks ago that we were in the winelands, and I’m a bit sad to realize how soon summer will be over.

Just an hour from Cape Town you’ll find a few of South Africa’s wine regions,  Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl.  It’s an easy day trip, but our travel agent suggested staying overnight for a few nights.

We stayed at the Akademie Guest House.  Our suite was enormous, probably larger than our apartment. It had multiple fireplaces and even a wood-burning outdoor hot tub. They also gave us a cell phone to use, so we could make local calls while we were out and about.

Like most of the places we stayed, all local drinks and spirits were included so between sundowners, nightcaps and wine tours, we had to pace ourselves.

The owner was a sweet Irish man who couldn’t have been nicer or more generous. If I’m being totally honest, as gorgeous as the decor was, I did find myself wishing that there was less of a colonial nostalgia thing going on.

After we checked in, we walked around the sleepy town of Franschhoek. There were actually more shops and restaurants than I expected on the main street.  We stopped into a highly recommended locally brewery called Tuk Tuk.  It didn’t disappoint.

That night we had set up a dinner with a local couple through Traveling Spoon.  This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.  Traveling Spoon is a company that gives you the opportunity to experience a meal, cooking class and/or market tour with local hosts in cities and towns around the world.   I can’t recommend it more highly.  It is awesome and incredibly affordable.

We arrived at Rozendal Farm in Stellenbosch for our cooking experience, which was a South African braai (bbq).

Willem and Jaatje greeted us warmly and we immediately felt at home in their adorable farm house.

First on the fire was braaibroodjies!

As you can tell, these are basically like gourmet grilled cheese cooked on the fire.  The combination of Mrs. Balls chutney, onion, tomato and cheese with the fresh bread was delicious.  This could have been a full meal…but there was much more to come.

Generally, when I think of braai’s, I think of meat, but Jaatje is a master of vegetable salads both cooked and raw.

The raw beet salad was delicious. I’ll definitely be experimenting with raw grated beet in the future.

Both the eggplant and sweet potato were cooked directly on the fire.  The eggplant were than peeled and mixed with tahini to make a delicious spread.

It was a fabulous meal enjoyed with delicious local wine.  It was a really fabulous night with incredibly fun and generous hosts.

The next morning we had a wine tour planned with Katie the Winefairy.  Once again, another incredible guide.  Way back when were first booked the trip, our travel agency asked to fill out a quick preference form.  Like Anine, Katie had read it carefully and remembered even the smallest of details!  Many things I had forgotten I even wrote!

She gave us a tour of the local towns and history before bringing us to the first winery of the day, Waterford.  They are known for their chocolate an wine pairing…don’t mind if I do.

Wine tasting is one of my favorite treats.  We take advantage of Frank’s business trips to SF with a weekend in Napa/Somona whenever we can.  We like to escape to Northfork now and again.  I can generally handle a long day of wine tours with just a quick nap before a late dinner.  That said, we were completely unprepared for South African wine tasting.  Our first winery tasting was 8 wines, all with generous pours and not a spittoon in site. Apparently, I need to get better at leaving wine in the glass!

Sidebar: This patagonia nanopuff saved me on the trip. It’s winter in South Africa, so even though it was warm midday, mornings and evenings were cold.  The nanopuff was super light but warm enough to get me through the entire trip.  Yay, primaloft!

Our next stops were Glen Carlou and La Motte.

We enjoyed every minute (and sip) of our day!

Next stop: Zambia!

Memorial Day in the Mountains

I can’t believe it’s Monday and I don’t have to go to work.  It’s amazing how much difference one extra day off makes.  I guess being on vacation also helps!   On Friday night, Frank and I stayed in the city and met friends for dinner at Blue Ribbon Sushi.  BR doesn’t take reservations, but we walked in around 7:30pm and got seated immediately, this is  one of the very best thing about summer weekends in the city.

Early Saturday morning, we packed up the car and the dog and drove to the Poconos.

This is actually the first time Pettitte has ever gone on vacation with us.

In about two hours, the city was a distant memory and we were checking into our cute little Home Away townhouse for the weekend.

There was one bedroom, two bathrooms and a loft space, so there was plenty of room for the three of us — the listing said it could sleep up to 6. .  This town house was part of Snow Ridge Village. In the winter, you can ski out your door to the sloops of Jack Frost Mountain and in the summer you’re adjacent to the Jack Frost National Golf Course.

Our first day, we settled in and had lunch on Lake Harmony.  We hiked around the trails on the property with Pettitte and hit some balls at the driving range.

IMG_7368

The weather was supposed to be terrible all weekend, but we really lucked out.  I wouldn’t say this area is known for great restaurants, so we opted to cook in most of the weekend.  As we were grilling on Saturday, we made friends with the neighbors next door who invited us over to their fire pit for drinks.

On Sunday, we went hiking in Hickory Run State Park.  IMG_7389

I was surprised by how agile Pettitte was on the rocks.  He hates water in almost any form, baths, rain, pools, etc., so when he voluntarily put his paws in the creek, we couldn’t have been more proud.  I’ll make a swimmer out of this city hound yet.

IMG_7387

Hawk run falls!  After the hike we had brunch in town and later played 9 holes of golf before getting rained out.

We ended the weekend with a leisurely breakfast of huevos rancheros.

IMG_7408

and a La Columbe draft latte, such a delicious treat!

IMG_7402

We’ve used AirBNB twice (San Sebastian and Napa) and Homeaway once, and have always had great experiences.  While I love a nice hotel, this ended up being a great, affordable option for a last minute getaway.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

New Years In Key West

Happy 2016!

I can’t believe we are only 4 years away from 2020, that seemed like the distant future when I was a kid.  It’s kind of crazy that we are living in the turn of the century.

I just returned from a great New Year’s in Key West.  It.was.awesome.  I feel so energized for the new year. 2015 brought lots of change (good and bad) and 2016 promises to bring even more (hopefully mostly good). I’m ready to get after it!

After spending Christmas Upstate in balmy 70 degree weather, we returned to New York to celebrate with Frank’s family and our adorable new nephew.

Then we took off for Miami.  We enjoyed some beach time and an amazing dinner at Joe’s Stone Crab.  We had to wait almost 3.5 hours, but with good friends and a fun celeb sighting of Ryan Phillipe and his new fiance, the time passed pretty quickly.

Then it was on to #allthefood. So much food, but so good. Here’s a shot of Joe’s namesake:

The next day we hit the open road for Key West.  The drive took about 6 hours rather than 3, but it was still fun thanks to lots of guest djing and good views.

We checked into Casa Marina, which had the most breath-taking grounds and beachfront. Right up there with the Four Seasons Wailea.  It was on the quiet area of Key West, which I just loved. You could still walk to everything, but it felt like being on a Caribbean island rather than in a party town.

The hotel rooms and service didn’t really match the ambience (or room rates), so I’m not sure we’d stay there again without a good deal, but boy was it stunning for our first trip to the Keys. Besides, I have my eyes on the Key West Real World House for my next visit — it’s on AirBNB.

That night we walked around Duval Street and stumbled upon a great dinner at Bliss followed by an awesome night of live music at the Green Parrot.

Our second day, we enjoyed some rest and relaxation at the beach before a last dinner and New Year’s celebration at Louie’s Backyard. I can’t recommend this place enough, make sure to sit outside.  I’m now officially a New Year’s Eve dinner person rather than bar party person.  It was so nice to sip great wine with friends and enjoy the evening without crowds and commotion. #imold #sothisismythirities

Our last morning in Key West we went on a bike tour led by my friend and three time ironman, JLo.  By the time we finished, we were famished and a lobster roll at DJ’s Clam Shack was in order.  The roll was awesome,  2nd only to Luke’s Lobster.

After a little more beach time and sad goodbyes, we hit the road back to the mainland.  We had much better luck and got through 150 miles of keys in 3 hours, which gave us time to make a pre-airport stop at Season’s 52. I’ve seen it on so many blogs, that I had to try it.  Pretty darn good – I love all the small plate options. I had the kale caesar and the artichoke and goat cheese flatbread.

We got back into New York around 2:30am.   So I got about 5.5 hours of sleep before I had to get on the metronorth to pick up Pettitte in Poughkeepsie.  4 + more hours of travel went faster than expected and it was so great to see P again. Even though he is a rascal and needs so much more training, we love him to pieces and missed him so much while he stayed with his grandparents.  To his credit, he is an excellent traveler and was such a good boy on the train. Also huge thanks to the metronorth for being so nice to animals.  Pettitte sat in his bag the whole time, but the conductor was kind enough to let him stick his head out so he could enjoy the view.  On a side note, has anyone found a good carrying bag for dogs around 30 pounds?  P’s only 22, but he’s so long that his carrier which claims to hold dogs up to 25 seems a bit snug.

I hope everyone had a great New Year. Here’s to 2016!
